Tips to Increase Life of Shoes
It is worth while to take care of shoes, for- they give the finish to any ensemble, provided they are well polished and of good shape. Shabby, badly, fitting shoes make the smartest costume look like something out of the old clothes bag. Always keep shoes on shoe-trees when not in use. It is a good plan to change walking shoes as soon as possible after coming into the house. Put them on the trees while they are still warm, and they will easily slip back into perfect shape. Shoes that are not kept on trees are inclined to sag, crack, and become bulky in odd places.
PATENT LEATHER
These demand a little special care.Never place them very near the fire.If you do, they are bound to crack, for the patent stiffens in heat. Before putting them on, you can warm them very slightly-at a discreet distance from the fire-for gentle heat causes the leather to expand without cracking. An oil bath occasionally will help patent leather shoes to wear well, stand the soles in a little olive oil overnight, and the grease will work into them and so into the uppers. This treatment will also make the shoes waterproof. Rub the uppers with olive oil, leave for an hour or two, wipe off superfluous oil, and wash the leather with a little vinegar. Finally, polish with a clean duster and apply the usual cream.
Oil Bath
Tan shoes also are improved by an oil bath once a week. If they are very dirt-stained in the meantime, they should be washed with soap and warm water, rubbed dry with a soft cloth, and polished in the usual way. Petrol will remove stains from brown leather; if this is not available, use salts of lemon, dissolving half a tea spoonful in a teacupful of warm water. If you want to darken tan shoes, rub them with a rag dipped in liquid ammonia. Allow this to dry on theleather, and repeat the process until the shoes are the right
To Blacken Shoes
You can blacken a pair of tan or brown shoes quite easily. Get half an ounce of ivory black from the oil shop, add the juice of one lemon and enough vinegar to make the mixture like ink, but do not make it too thin. After brushing the shoes, apply the black with a brush or rag.
